Trails to Trades event June 7

By way of introduction, my name is Matt Kosara, current ASM with Troop 28 Croton (former Cubmaster of Pack 28).

I wanted to invite you and your scouts to an event I’m running for the Council now in its second year that we call Trails to Trades. At the event we bring together Scouts (Cubs, Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venturers, Explorers) with members of the local building trades unions. We’ll once again be holding the event at the training center of the Operating Engineers Local 137 in Montrose, NY and so far 9 local unions are confirmed to attend including the Bricklayers, Operating Engineers, Laborers, Carpenters, Teamsters, Ironworkers and more. The event is a great chance for the scouts to get a hands-on introduction to these trades where each one of them brings activities for the kids to do. I’m also working with one of the locals to put on a Surveying Merit Badge class during the event. I’ll pass along more detail on that as soon as we get everything confirmed.

This event is both a good fundraising and recruiting opportunity as well. Thanks to the generosity of the local unions as well as the contractor organizations there is no cost to the council. Though the event is free to attend, the merit badge registration fee goes directly to Council. We also invite local schools and other organizations, which makes for a good opportunity to recruit into Scouting. Thank you to fellow board members Matt Pepe, Josh Davies, and Ron Olori for helping make last year’s event such a success.
